Description: 1955: Walt Disney opened Tomorrowland at Disneyland, the start of the space race, and the Golden Age of American Capitalism. As millions of GIs returned home, many settled with their families in the growing suburbs. These mid-century homes were sleek and functional, often including decor calling back to the technology that helped end the war: the atom. Atomic decor was thus inspired by a simplified ball and stick form of the atom. The vibrant colors and playful shapes of atomic age design became extremely popular and provided people with a hopeful, idealistic vision of the future. This circa 1950s pair of lamps are a quintessential example of atomic age design. Their striking turquoise teal color, gold metallic flecking and base, and whimsical ball and stick detailing being hallmarks of this style. The ceramic bases feature a floral petal shape and taper up into a brass neck. These lamps have new sockets and have been rewired. They are in very good condition for their age. Brass neck shows some wear/tarnish, very slight chipping on one petal ridge, slight wear to gold on one base, small chip near underside of base (does not show unless picked up). The neck of one lamp appears to lean slightly when viewed from some angles, but hard to tell. Please see pictures. These have been set up to fit a standard spider lamp harp (needed). Would look fantastic with fiberglass, parchment, burlap, or any kind of retro lamp shade. A stunning matched pair. Measures 15 inches to the top of the socket, 4 inches in diameter at its base, and approximately 6.5 inches at its widest. Unmarked. MCM, sputnik, vintage, gold speckle, glazed, 50s
