Description: This vintage Schrade Cutlery Company melon tester folding knife predates 1946 is a unique addition to any collection. The cream-colored handle is made of plastic or epoxy or bakelite, while the blade is made of carbon steel with a plain edge. The knife has a manual opening mechanism and a straight point blade range of 4.75". This knife is a true vintage piece, dating back to the 1930s to mid 1940s and is an original Schrade Cutlery Co. knife made in Walden, NY. USA. This collectible folding knife is perfect for anyone interested in vintage items, advertising, or melon testing. These knives were commonly carried by bulk buyers and used to cut sections of meat or melons deep in order to guage the quality of what they were purchasing. It predates 1946 as in that year the Schrade Cutlery Co. merged with Imperial Knife Corp. and became Imperial-Schrade. The blade shows some minor staining consistent with age and use and has some surface scratches and milling marks. The cream colored handle shows minor surface scratches but shows lots of shine and no cracks or chips. The folding mechanism works perfectly, and the bolsters are tight with normal play that is by no means excessive. There is no rust or corrosion on any of the steel or brass structures, and the blade is razor sharp. The advertising on the knife is for Swift & Company, which can trace its origins to 1855 when Gustavus Franklin Swift opened a butcher shop and slaughterhouse in Eastern Massachusetts By 1875, he incorporated his company in Chicago as it had become a major rail hub. With the development of the refrigerated railcar or "Reefer," Swift grew to a nationwide distributor or beef, pork, and sheep products. In addition to meat products Swift & Co. at one time, sold a variety of dairy products as well as Peter Pan Peanut Butter and Butterball Turkeys.
