Wilkinson 19 by 12 inches From AskArt, "A Canadian painter, Thomas Harrison Wilkinson (usually signs: T.H. Wilkinson) was born in Bradford, Yorkshire, England. He immigrated to London, Ontario in 1863, lived in Toronto from 1882 to 1909, and died in Hamilton, Ontario, where he had lived since 1909. He was a member of the Ontario Society of Artists* and exhibited with the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts*. His works are in several Canadian museums including the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. His primary medium was watercolors although he also painted in oils. His best known subjects are landscapes, marine scenes, rural scenes, rivers, mountains and streetscapes; many include small figures of people or animals. The locations included Muskoka, Parry Sound, Georgian Bay, Montreal, Quebec, Lake Louise, the Rocky Mountains and British Colombia. He also traveled and painted in North Carolina, England, Italy and Spain. His style could be described as Naturalism* or Realism*; the askART auction results have many good illustrations of his work.Wilkinson is generally considered to be self-taught with little or no academic training. He was a member of the Ontario Society of Artists* (1891 – 1899) and exhibited with them from 1888 to 1897. He exhibited with the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts* in 1888 and 1891; and, at the Toronto Industrial Exhibition from 1891 to 1895. (2) His works were also featured in the exhibition “Historical Water Colours of Canada West: The collection of Mr. Percy C. Band” at the Dundas Historical Society Museum, Dundas, Ontario (1961). According to the Canadian Heritage Information Network* and individual museum sources, his works are in the permanent collections of the Agnes Etherington Art Centre (Kingston, Ontario), Art Gallery of Hamilton (Ontario), Dundas Museum & Archives (Dundas, Ontario), Mendel Art Gallery (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan), Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (Quebec), Musée de Charlevoix (La Malbaie, Quebec), Robert McLaughlin Gallery (Oshawa, Ontario) and the Trent University Art Collection (Peterborough, Ontario).
