MUSICIANS: Neil Jason (bass), Al Izzo (drums), Buz Buchanan (drums), Jeremy Spencer (guitar, vocals), Jeff Schoen (keyboards), Michael Fogarty (keyboards, vocals), and Victor Salazar (percussion) with The Songbirds (backing vocals). TRACKS: Deeper (5:26), Sunshine (5:27), Love Our Way Outta Here (8:30), Flee (6:00). Cool Breeze (3:34), You’ve Got The Right (2:54), and Travellin’ (3:26). DESCRIPTION: Back in 1979, while working in a record store, I was surprised and curious to find a new Jeremy Spencer album listed along with a batch of upcoming Atlantic Records’ releases. Having followed Fleetwood Mac since the late 60s, including picking up on both Peter Green and Jeremy Spencer’s first solo releases, and knowing a bit about Spencer’s spiritual pursuits during the ensuing years, my interest was piqued as to the music Flee had to offer. Not surprisingly this is Spencer’s most mainstream sounding release to date; though the dance rhythm oriented and vocal treatments of side one seem a bit dated, the songwriting is quite good, including Sunshine, which is a reworking of a Jeremy Spencer And The Children Of God song. Musical inspiration and creativity are at odds with commercial appeal here. The powers that be at Atlantic obviously decided that laying on the gloss was the way to insure a hit record, despite their promotional ad for the album stating: “Discover the beauty of simplicity with The Jeremy Spencer Band.” The first three tracks are arranged and mixed by the "executive producer" and others, while side two is much stronger as Jeremy and Michael Fogarty (who contributes as much or more to the music here as Jeremy Spencer) apparently had a bit more control. The vocals, far from awful, are mostly by Jeremy, with a couple of leads from Fogarty, and one from Jeanne Hendricks, Cool Breeze, which was issued as a single, reaching #21 on Billboard’s adult contemporary hit chart. While this project will not be everyone's cup of tea, it certainly isn't a waste. The title track (also later to be retooled by Spencer), Cool Breeze, You've Got The Right, and Travelin' are all worth your consideration. Not every listener will be expecting blues, and some of Jeremy's fans will be interested to hear a pop effort. Of course, this album is very much a product of its time, but that's not all it is, and it’s a good thing to have this back in circulation. Those new to Jeremy Spencer may first want to check out his bluesy roots rock self-titled solo debut, which features backing by all of the early Fleetwood Mac membership and his 1972 release, Jeremy Spencer And The Children (CBS dropped off the Of God part of the title for its release). If you’ve got both of those albums then grab this while it’s still available as it’s likely to be a few decades or more before it receives another reissue. THIS ITEM IS NEW AND UNPLAYED. MIX: This sometimes appears in my title line and refers to a group's/artist's music having a mix of styles such a rock track with jazz then followed by a straight rock track followed by a psych rock track, etc., as opposed to a blues album with the album's tracks having predominantly one style. XT, XTKS, or #XTKS: Usually in lower case type as part of the title line, denotes bonus tracks on this release (extra track, extra tracks, or the number of extra tracks).
