Description: A pleasing & very finely detailed one color advertising card flyer insert showing the "Kicking Mule" toy mechanical bank aka the "I Always Did 'Spise a Mule Bank" (bench version). The card was made circa 1897-1923 or so. An interesting "I Always Did 'Spise A Mule Bank" ad flyer. This example is somewhat rare because it has a wholesale distributor/ manufacturers imprint on the front bottom (& not the imprint of Stevens). The card has the imprint of: "National Novelty Corporation Manufacturers, 826 and 828 Broadway, New York." Very few one color J. & E. Stevens bank cards are found which have a distributor or a manufacturer name other than the Stevens name usually on the imprint. Around 98% of all the one color Stevens ad flyers known either have the J. & E. Stevens Co. imprint on the front under the instructions or are blank on the section under the instructions. The reason for this is that the one color type of flyer with instructions was intended to be inserted inside the wooden box with the bank by the maker in the factory with the J. & E. Stevens maker's attribution on the flyer. It was probably only by a special request of a wholesaler/distributor/manufacturer/ or retailer that Stevens would insert a specially imprinted card with the other company's name on the flyer for inclusion in with the bank. This flyer insert card is printed on thinner paper stock than a standard ad card of the type handed out to advertise the bank. The card measures 5 1/2 inches by 3 3/16 inches. The card has light overall pleasing even age toning. The lower left edge of card has an area that is slightly scuffed. Mechanical bank collector F. H. Griffith is said to have obtained this insert flyer ad card during a visit to the old J. & E. Stevens factory somewhere between 1942-1952. This card has a pleasing pedigree having previously resided in three significant mechanical bank collections including: F. H. Griffith, Bill Jones, James Maxwell. Note: the example we are offering in this listing is the exact example pictured in the Morphy Mechanical Banks Book on page 381. A pleasing go with to put with an example of the interesting "Kicking Mule" aka "I Always Did 'Spise a Mule" Bank (bench version).
