And so for his Post article on the Old Order Amish, Bird carefully eased his way into their community--talking with a farmer at his plow, sitting in on Amish school lessons--and with the acceptance of his subjects, Bird's story unfolded. Contributing photographer JOHN LAUNOIS and associate photography editor SALLY REUKAUF were often suspected of being pesky tourists and asked to move on, but finally a young Amishman invited them to his home for supper--and introduced them unobtrusively into the rarely photographed round of Amish life seen in this issue...At first Red Skelton refused to talk to editor-at-large BILL DAVIDSON for a Post article; but on the set of Skelton's TV show, the comedian did engage in audible and anecdote-laden conversations with people to the right, left, fore and aft of Davidson. After a few days of what Davidson calls " an indirect interview," Skelton relented and began to talk to the writer--directly. / Cover photo by Don Ornitz CONTRIBUTORS:William A.
