Description: This beautiful box was done by Tatyana Smirnova from Palekh. She's one of their more known artists especially thanks to her going between Russia and the US to speak and inform about the art of miniature lacquer boxes and the painting behind them. She is also known for her use of Mother of Pearl on her boxes because it is very hard to get the iridescent glow to come through with the egg tempura paint that Palekh artists are known for using but Tatyana manages to execute it very well every time. This box also has the traditional red lacquer interior. We weren't really sure of the tale the painting is based off of but we thought maybe it could be an illustration of the Princess & the Pea. There is a small scratch on the bottom of the box, but other than that it is in excellent condition. This box is 2.5 inches long x 2 inches wide x 1 inch tall. Bin# 17-50007 *Please keep in mind any translations on these lacquer boxes are rough as none of us are fluent in Russian. These boxes are paper mâché NOT wood like many seem to think. They are also usually one of a kind. From our research we’ve found these boxes usually take each artist at least a year to finish and they paint with brushes that normally only contain 1-2 hairs of various creatures. There are also only four villages in Russia that are known for these exquisite boxes: Palekh, Fedoskino (the oldest one to begin lacquer painting), Mstera, & Kholui.
