Description: Rene Gagnon autograph letter signed during his Marine service in WWII. After raising the American flag over Iwo Jima, Gagnon became famous for appearing in the iconic photograph capturing the event. He writes from Charleston, South Carolina to his girlfriend Pauline Harnois on 16 October 1943. It reads in part, ''...I wrote and forgot to mail the letter, but I'll make it up to you by writing two letters tomorrow...I've been boxing quite a few times, just to pick up extra dollars to get that little cottage you wanted after the war...don't tell mom I've been fighting, she wouldn't like the idea...Rene.'' Two page letter measures 7.25'' x 10.5''. Accompanied by free franked mailing envelope handwritten and signed by Gagnon via return address.
