Description: November 23, 1957 issue of "Leather and Shoes," published by Rumpf Publishing, Chicago, 124 pages, large softcover, 11" by 8.25". Rare magazine published for the retail shoe trade, this issue focusing on shoe production and "creative genius" from New York, with a suite of "New York Skyline Sketches" by notable American shoe designers, including David Evans, Grace Powell, Ida LaSalle, Margaret Clark, Sylvie Hamilton, Harry Berk, Beth Levine, Jean Bandler, and Elinor Bohle. These sketches - as well as some ads throughout - feature illustrations of shoe designs that are highly reminiscent of the early design work of Andy Warhol, whose career as an artist began as a highly regarded illustrator of shoes for magazines and ad agencies in New York. I don't have proof that Warhol is behind some of these illustrations, as Warhol's name does not appear in the magazine, but the magazine dates from the precise period during which Warhol was very active as a graphic illustrator of shoes (roughly 1952 to 1959). Also contains news, notices, and developments within the shoe industry and dozens of full-page ads. Rare. In very good condition overall - interior clean and unmarked, general edgewear and light rubbing to cover, small chip to top right corner. Buyer to pay for item plus shipping.
