Singed "Thomas Yeates" in bottom margin. -Description: This is the original artwork for the 12-1-2013 Sunday comic strip PRINCE VALIANT written by Mark Schultz and drawn by Thomas Yeates. This Sunday is from the "Sea of Myths" story line, which began with Prince Valiant, his wife Aleta and their children travelling by sea from Camelot to the Misty Isles. After encountering what appear to be the sirens of Greek myth, their ship is wrecked on the rocky shore of an uncharted island in the Mediterranean Sea. Val is lured away from his family and encounters those who claim to be the demi-god Calypso and the cyclops Polyphemus. After escaping them (Calypso believes that Val is her long lost love, Ulysses), Val is reunited with his family and his friend, Bukota. The group encounters a siren, Zulfa, who tells them the origin story of the mythical sirens, who have long caused shipwrecks with their haunting, irresistible songs. It seems that there is more to the legend than meets the eye. In this Sunday, the loyal Bukota seeks to protect Val and his family from treachery as the ship and its crew encounters the legendary song of the Sirens. Val makes an appearance in the final panel. Fascinating story and beautifully rendered inks by Tom Yeates. A rare Prince Valiant original. ILL -Comic Strip and creator information: Prince Valiant is the renowned comic strip created by Harold "Hal" Foster in 1937 which told the tale of Prince Valiant of Thule, knight of the round table. Foster drew the strip until his retirement 1970 when John Cullen Murphy took over (Foster continued to provide pencil rough layouts of the strip for several years). Murphy retired from the strip in 2004 and was succeeded by Mark Schultz (writing) and Gary Gianni (art). In 2012, Tom Yeates, comic book artist and illustrator (known for his work on Swamp Thing, Tarzan, Zorro and many other characters), became Prince Valiant's fourth regular artist (Gray Morrow and Wally Wood drew try-out pages in 1970, and I believe that Mark Schultz drew a few pages filling in for Gary Gianni). The strip continues to run through today (and is, along with Dick Tracy, the last of the great classic adventure strips). -Notes: Panel captions (from the published Sunday which I found online): -Panel 1. Bukota, long suspicious of the intent of Karen's guards Bogram and Guryan, has found Guryan about to enter Val's family's private quarters surreptitiously.
