Description: A finely detailed marine ship oil painting portrait of the American Steamer “Antinous” off the coast of Le Havre, France circa 1920, by French artist Edward (Edouard) Adam (1847-1929). Adam’s real name was Marie-Edouard Adam, and he was born in Brie-Comte- Robert, France, and became the pupil of Durand-Brager, studying the trade of marine painter in Paris. He moved to Le Havre in 1873 to paint ship portraits, and went on to become very well known for his marine paintings, including being commissioned by Admiral Francois Edmond Paris, who was curator of the Louvre Museum of Marine, to continue the collection of portraits of boats started by Frederic Roux to the Naval Museum of the Louvre. He represented naval battles or scenes of campaign, in addition to traditional portraits, and is sometimes referred to as the “French Antonio Jacobsen”. Oil on canvas, signed and dated “Ed. Adam, 1920” LR, and housed in a decorative period giltwood frame. Minor frame spot losses. Dimensions: 24” H x 36 ½” W, actual; 29 ½” H x 42 1/8” W, framed.
