Description: Gay Toys began manufacturing plastic products for the dime store market in 1962. The company, located in Michigan, held out against schoolboy snickering until 1986, when they finally changed their name to “American Plastic Toys.” For a small-to-midsize toy manufacturer they made surprisingly sturdy and interesting products of the type that you’d buy at the drug store or five-and-dime, or the kind your unfashionable aunt would get you for your birthday, not realizing that it wasn’t actually a Star Wars or GI Joe toy. Also notable is that APT was and remains one of the only toy manufacturers that produces its products in the US — in this case, entirely in Michigan. This item is from the early 1980s “Laser Force” playset, a rough lift from Star Wars. The set included a rover vehicle, space plane (here), and action figures. Gay Toys were made from lighter plastic than toys by Kenner, Hasbro, or Fisher Price. As a result they stood up less well to rough play than their more expensive peers, and are now quite rare, especially in good condition. This item is complete and intact with bright decals, functioning canopies, and no major defects. See photos for condition details.
