From his monumental Columbia debut recording of the “Goldberg Variations” in 1955 to his re-recording of the same “Goldberg Variations” in 1981, Gould's recording activities were centered on Bach's works. Gould himself was conscious of the need for comprehensive recordings of Bach's works, and as a result, major solo keyboard works were recorded, imprinting a Bach interpretation that transcended instruments and time periods, with clarity of structure, vividness in presenting complex polyphony, and submerged song. This is the latest edition of the “Complete Works of Bach,” which has been a staple since it was first released in Japan in 1974, and includes Bach recordings for Columbia and Sony Classical that were released before Gould's death. It also includes live recordings and other sources released after his death.
