Biographical Background Frans Van Riel Painter, Photographer & Printmaker, born in Rome, Italy in 1879. Early on he had a very strong interest in the arts and studied painting in Rome. In 1906 he settled in Buenos Aires where he worked as an illustrator for the newspaper La Prensa. In 1913 he opened his own photography studio there and in 1918 he founded “Augusta”, the first local magazine specializing in the arts. In 1924 he moved his studio to a larger location and jointly open the first art gallery in Argentina. Argentine President Marcelo T. de Alvear attended the grand opening. His gallery became the hub/meeting place for artists, intellectuals and other prominent figures of the Buenos Aires elite. The Friends of Art Association, the magazine Very Estimar, the Institute of Modern Art and the first independent theater in Buenos Aires operated from his gallery. Frans van Riel died in 1950. The photography studio closed and since then the gallery passed into the hands of Fran van Riel Jr., who ran it for more than forty years until passing the baton to his daughter Gabriela, continuing the family legacy to this day. Anna Pavlova was born February 12, 1881 and died of pleurisy on January 23rd, 1931. She was a Russian prima ballerina and a principal artist of the Imperial Russian Ballet and the Ballets Russes of Sergei Diaghilev, but is most recognized for creating the role of The Dying Swan and, with her own company, being the first ballerina to tour the world, including South America, India, Mexico and Australia.
