CENTRAL ASIA, Hunnic Tribes, Nezak Huns, 6th C, Winged Buffalo Crown Drachm

Description: HUNNIC TRIBES, Nezak Huns, ‘Nezak Shah’, Vondrovec ā-group, c. AD 484-578, billon drachm (26mm, 3.78gm). O: Legend Nyčky MLK’ (“Nezak Shah”). Bust right wearing winged buffalo crown, streamers behind. R: Fire altar with attendants, wheel above each. Vondrovec [Göbl] 198. Nice strike with attractive green and earthen patina. The Nezak Shahs ruled a significant principality - known variously as Kapisi, Jibin or Cao - south of the Hindu Kush in what is today Afghanistan, from circa 484 to about 665. The Nezak Shahs are distinguished by the winged buffalo crown which adorns their coins. This crown is mentioned by the Chinese Buddhist pilgrim Xuanzang who visited Kapisi about the year 630. The Nezak are the last of four recognized Hunnic states of Central Asia, preceded by the Kidarites, Hephthalites and Alchons. The Nezak capital was located at Bagram, north of modern Kabul. The Nezak Shahs rose to power after the Alchon Huns abandoned the Kabul region for India. The Nezak Shahs were recognized by Tang China and received regular diplomatic missions. About the year 665, a commander or vassal of the reigning shah usurped the throne and established the Turk Shahi dynasty. TERMS OF SALE We combine shipping!
