Beulah Stevenson is well known for her abstract expressionist paintings and drawings. This ink wash drawing is an excellent example of the artist's work. The illustration board backing with margins measures 10 1/4 x 13 inches. The drawing comes unframed. PLEASE NOTE CONDITION: The drawing is in excellent vintage condition. Beulah (Elsie Sloan) Stevenson was born 1890 in Brooklyn Heights, New York where she lived and worked until her death in 1965. She studied at the Pratt Institute, at the Art Students League with John Sloan, and in Provincetown with Hans Hoffman. Stevenson was a printmaker, painter, illustrator, and teacher, as well as curator at the Brooklyn Museum. She maintained an active membership in a wide range of artist's organizations including the New York Society of Woman Artists (president), the National Association of Women Artists (board member from 1949), the Brooklyn Society of Artists (vice-president), the Art Institute of Chicago, the International Graphic Society Inc., the Philadelphia Print Club, the Provincetown Art Association and the Creative Artist's Association. She was a member of the American Artist Congress which endorsed government support of art unions and promoted the social-realist style of American scene painting. When the Congress' affiliation with the Communist Party increased, Stevenson left it to join the Federation of Modern Painters and Sculptors, established to promote avant-garde art. _____________________________ AUTHENTICITY OF ARTWORK IS GUARANTEED.
