Description: Aptenia Cordifolia variegata goes by many names some of which includes Heart Leaf Ice Plant, Red Apple Aptenia, Baby Sunrose, or Dew plant. These are fast growing, mat forming perennial succulents and as such they require very little maintenance once established if they are in the ground. This is one of the many perfect starter plants for the newbie gardener seeking something that they will not easily kill in less than a month (LOL). The leaves of the Heart Leaf Ice Plant are bright green, fleshy, heart to oval shaped with flowers resembling miniature asters that are either red, purple, yellow or white depending on the variety you have. The heart-shaped, cream edged green leaves make a wonderful contrast against the bright magenta blooms. This is a succulent with a trailing habit making it perfect for ground cover, decorative planter pots, or mixed plant hanging baskets. It looks spectacular when planted above a retaining wall where it's stems can grow over the masonry to provide a beautiful burst of color during the summer blooming season. When in a hanging basket this succulent may require a little more attention if conditions are extremely hot or dry during the summer. I find that in sunny south west Florida I have to give mine a good watering at least one to two times a week or the leaves begin to look drab and withered telling me that it's time to provide life giving water!! Fortunately, Aptenia is a very forgiving plant and even if you forget to water and the leaves become withered, once you give it a good drink, it will typically plump back up to it's usual graceful appearance. Generally, succulents thrive in drought-like conditions but there is a limit to everything. To determine if your plant is too dry, simply insert your finger about 2 to 3 inches into the soil and if the soil feels very dry then water well until the soil becomes wet. Water Aptenia mostly when the soil is completely dry, then provide enough water to drench the soil to about 6 inches deep. Do not leave your plant in standing water for extended periods of time. Succulents do not like water settled around their roots which can lead to root rot. Also note that Aptenia does not need to be fertilized. I grow mine in a combination of 50/50 sphagnum peat soil/cow manure and perlite and if you look at my pictures you will see that the plant is thriving and has outdone itself!! If you live somewhere that temperatures might drop below 50 degrees F (10 degrees C) you should bring your plant inside to prevent damage from frost. NOTE WELL: I BOX AND SHIP MY PLANTS AS SECURELY AS POSSIBLE TO ENSURE YOUR CUTTINGS ARRIVE AS HEALTHY AND VIABLE AS POSSIBLE. SOME LEAVES MAY FALL OFF THE PLANTS AND THEY MAY APPEAR SLIGHTLY WILTED ON ARRIVAL. DO NOT BE DECEIVED INTO THINKING THE PLANTS ARE DEAD. I HAVE ROOTED CUTTINGS THAT SAT DRY FOR 3 DAYS JUST TO TEST THE PROCESS FOR MYSELF AND I HAVE STILL BEEN ABLE TO SUCCESSFULLY ROOT THE CUTTINGS. THESE ARE SUCCULENTS WHICH STORE WATER SO THEY CAN SURVIVE DROUGHT LIKE CONDITIONS AND STILL BE REVIVED ONCE PLACED IN WATER. (DO NOT USED CHLORINATED TAP WATER WHICH IS POISON TO BOTH HUMANS AND PLANTS. USE DISTILLED, SPRING OR REVERSE OSMOSIS (RO) WATER FOR 12 TO 24 HOURS (IF NECESSARY) THEN TRANSFER YOUR CUTTINGS TO SOIL. PLUS, I ALWAYS GIVE AT LEAST ONE OR MORE FREE CUTTINGS AS AN INSURANCE PLAN TO ENSURE YOUR SUCCESS. HAPPY GARDENING!!!! :)
