Description: This striking antique hand painted Japanese fan, c. 1890s, was made for the export market. It is a double paper leaf fan with six bamboo sticks and two bone guards, which are pierced in a double cat's eye motif and decorated in a floral and cross-hatch design in brown paint meant to resemble the more expensive inlaid ivory fans of the time. The fan is painted on a blue ground with traditional Japanese autumn flowers: chrysanthemums and a butterfly on one side (embellished with gold paint) and wild carnations on the reverse. The fan is 11 3/4" in length and 22" across when fully opened. This fan is part of a large collection of antique Japanese fans given to us to sell for the benefit of our library. Good vintage condition. Bone sticks are in excellent condition and retain their painted decoration. The edges of the fan show some wear and paint loss, which appears to have been partially touched up with blue paint. The brass loop is missing its tassel. Fan is in good working order.
