Its industry was tools and hardware and its headquarters were in Cleveland, Ohio (1902-1981) and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (1981-1999). In 1967 the company was acquired by the Alleghany-Ludlum Steel Company. The Shapleigh Hardware Company was founded in 1843 by Augustus F. Shapleigh in St. Louis, MO. He started in the hardware business when he was 15 and eventually opened his own business. He expanded with the Rodgers Brothers and Company hardware firm out of Philadelphia, PA. They wanted to open another store out west and so the Rodger, Shapleigh and Company store began in St. Louis, MO. They changed the name to Shapleigh, Day and Company in 1847 when Rodgers passed away. Day retired in 1863 and so Shapleigh continued on as A.F. Shapleigh and Company. He eventually retired in 1900 and in 1901 the company changed to Norvell-Shapleigh Hardware Company in 1901. They changed the name again to Shapleigh Hardware Company in 1918 and continued with that name until they sold the company to Curtis Mfg. Co. in 1955. Curtis kept it going until 1963 and then closed down the Shapleigh name. The Diamond brand transferred ownership to Val-Test eventually.
