Description: Antique Japanese Katagami Kimono Stencil Japanese Katagami is a stencil pattern for dyeing textiles used for printing designs and patterns on kimono and other fabric items. Using traditional mulberry paper, this katagami stencil with silk mesh backing is decorated with thick stalks of bamboo and plum blossoms (ume). This antique Katagami was designed during the mid or late Edo period (1860) to early Meiji (1900) in Central Japan. It is made of two or more layers of handmade mulberry paper laminated together and waterproofed with persimmon tannin. Katagami printing uses a technique called resist dye where a paste is applied to the fabric with the katagami before dipping in ink. The open space on the katagami will be a negative space in the printed design.
