Description: Item DetailsAntique French Hand Painted Porcelain Mantel Clock, Circa 1850 Jacob Petit (1797-1868) Offers Welcome An exquisite and very fine example of a French mantel clock dating to circa 1850. The clock, by the Jacob Petit foundry and completed during the Napoleon III era, demonstrates the finest quality of craftsmanship. The front elevation of the clock comprises of a white enamel dial featuring black hand painted Arabic numerals with outer chapter indicating minute marks alongside central ormolu rosette and scrolled hands. The dial, protected by a thick bevelled glass door encased within an ormolu beaded bezel. A finely hand painted scene depicting a house within a rural setting decorates the front elevation whilst curtains and swags adorn the corners of the case. The cathedral domed top with four finials to each corner. The whole, with exquisite gilt highlights against a bleu celeste ground. The 8 day twin train mechanical movement strikes the hours and half on a bell and is regulated by a countwheel. The mechanism is protected by a pierced ormolu door allowing the chime of the bell to be heard by the user whilst being protected by its orginal emerald green silk lining. The clocks mechanism is stamped by one of the most renowned, prolific and important 19th century clock manufacturers, Samuel Marti. The ormolu is in good condition and retains a very good colour. The dial does show signs of age and usage. The hand painted decoration is in good condition.
