Please note that red maple seeds may or may not germinate without stratification (this variability in stratification is due to genetic differences in red maple populations). If stratification is required: Stratify: Sow seed in moist medium for 60 to 90 days at 33 – 39 degrees Fahrenheit (place in refrigerator); remove seeds that have sprouted. Germination: Seeds can also be planted ¼ to 1 inch directly in soil in a sunny location. Water well, but do not allow soil to become boggy. More information: The Red Maple tree (Acer rubrum) is also known as a Swamp, Water or Soft Maple tree and is one of the most common and widespread deciduous trees of eastern North America. One of the trees most distinctive features is its brilliant deep scarlet foliage in autumn. The red maple is adaptable to a very wide range of site conditions and can be found growing in swamps, on poor dry soils and most anywhere in between. It is most commonly used as a shade tree for landscapes, but is also used commercially on a small scale for maple syrup. The red maple also makes a lovely bonsai tree. This medium to large sized tree has been known to reach heights of 115 feet; however, its average height is between 59 to 89 feet. Hardy in zones 3 – 9. The seeds tend to germinate in early Summer soon after they are released as long as the appropriate light, moisture and temperatures are present. Uses Ornamental – Excellent shade tree. Brilliant scarlet leaves in the fall and lovely small red flowers in early spring. Wildlife – Squirrels love the seeds; Elk and white-tailed deer use the current season’s growth of red maple as an important winter food source. Cultivation – Good choice for urban areas when there is ample room for its root system. The red maple is excellent at withstanding harsh urban conditions, including tolerance of both dry and wet soils, and a higher tolerance of pollution than sugar maple. Note: Due to the many factors involved in successful germination, the Seller cannot be responsible for the Buyer’s growing methods or mistakes. Although there is a good overview of the plant species on this page, it is still recommended to check specialist literature for more details and practices specific to your climate and soil conditions to avoid mistakes in the germination and growing process.
