Description: Ozzie Smith is a former professional baseball player who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for 19 seasons. He was born on December 26, 1954, in Mobile, Alabama, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest defensive shortstops of all time.Smith started his professional career in 1977 with the San Diego Padres, where he played for four seasons before being traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1982. He spent the next 15 seasons with the Cardinals, where he established himself as one of the best shortstops in the game.Smith was known for his acrobatic defensive plays, earning him the nickname "The Wizard of Oz." He won 13 Gold Glove awards for his defensive prowess, including 11 consecutive awards from 1980 to 1990. He also made 15 All-Star teams and won a Silver Slugger award in 1987.Offensively, Smith was not known for his power, but he was a consistent hitter and a threat on the basepaths. He finished his career with a .262 batting average, 2,460 hits, 580 stolen bases, and 793 runs batted in (RBIs).Smith played in three World Series during his career, winning the championship with the Cardinals in 1982. He retired after the 1996 season with a career fielding percentage of .978, the highest among shortstops with at least 1,000 games played at the position.In recognition of his outstanding career, Smith was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2002.
