Description: DRAWING OF ELIZABETH COTTEN, SIGNED BY COTTEN (1969?) Original Vintage Pencil Drawing by DAVID KIPPUTH, 10 1/2" x 7 3/4" on paper. Presented to ***me*** and inscribed as follows: "To Elliot From Dave Kipputh March 12, 1975" NOTE: In 1962 several Hootenanys were held at the rear of my bookshop (Elliot's Books) on Broadway in New Haven. David Kipputh, a young guitarist, performed there and several years later begifted me with his drawing of Cotten. Now at the age of 91, I am passing it on to another admirer. Elizabeth "Libba" Cotten was an influential American folk and blues musician. She was a self-taught left-handed guitarist who played a guitar strung for a right-handed player, but played it upside down. This position meant that she would play the bass lines with her fingers and the melody with her thumb. Born: January 5, 1893, Chapel Hill, NC Died: June 29, 1987 (age 94 years), Syracuse, NY Genres: Blues, Folk Elizabeth “Libba” Cotten’s warm and intimate recordings and live performances inspired generations of artists, and her guitar prowess and musical inventiveness influenced countless other musicians. Cotten’s compositions have been performed by Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, the Grateful Dead, Taj Mahal, and Peter, Paul and Mary, among many others.
