This obligation is stated on the obverse of the bill: "This certifies that there is on deposit in the Treasury of the United States of America, One Dollar in Silver payable to the bearer on demand." The obverse design frames the legendary image of George Washington, Americas first president. A portrait for the ages, it was painted by one of the nations most famous artists, Gilbert Stuart, in 1796 when Washington was 64 years old. The reverse features the Great Seal of the United States created by our founding fathers to reflect the beliefs and values of the new nation. When an Act of Congress and President Dwight Eisenhower declared "In God We Trust" America's official national motto, the 1957 1$ Silver Certificate became the first U.S. currency to incorporate the wording into its design.
