The pearl cultivators/farmers insert a ball made out of the Mississippi mussel shell into the organisms to create cultured pearls. SOUTH SEA PEARLS are large pearls, ranging mainly from 9 mm to 16 mm, with some larger pearls up to 18mm (extremely rare), are farmed in Australia, Papua, Indonesia and the Philippines, and are mainly white and yellow/gold in colour. They are mostly round or oval/drop in shape with medium to high lustre. Not to be confused with FRESHWATER PEARLS which originate in the freshwater lakes and rivers of China.
